Here we are in the Skierniewice Jewish cemetery at just the moment you wrote to me. I’ll write more about our visit soon.

Both cemeteries in Skierniewice are problematic. It is the older cemetery than this one that is now someone’s backyard. Poland repurposed the land and built on top of Jewish cemeteries.

Yes, it is problematic. I just got home, but I’m planning to write more about it. At least the property owners take some responsibility for the few existing tombstones and they let strangers into their backyard to visit them.

There photo shown here is of the 2nd oldest cemetery in Skierniewice. This is where extended members of the Piwko family were killed and placed in an unmarked mass grave.
The day I was there last summer, 2 boys were using this cemetery as a playground. They were playing soccer. This is another form of repurposing the land in Poland.

Unimaginably awful things happened during World War II. And more needs to be done to honor the memory of those who were murdered. The mass grave is marked, though shrubs have overgrown making it easy to miss.
