Uncovering Jewish heritage has multiple meanings here–it refers to my process of discovery about my own Jewish roots, the history of Jews in Poland, memories of Poles about Jews and Jews about Poles, commemorations of Jewish life in Poland, the remnants of Jewish culture in Poland, the murder and death of Jews and Jewish culture, and the return/revival/reinvention of Jewish life in Poland. Posts are written by Marysia Galbraith, cultural anthropologist, professor at New College and the Department of Anthropology at The University of Alabama, and Fulbright scholar in Poland for the 2014-2015 academic year. Guest posts are welcome. Contact me if you are interested.

My mother is traveling to Kutno, Poland from July 16-22, 2023. She is looking to understand her Jewish heritage in relation to Central Poland. Please provide information so that she can learn more about the opportunities in Kutno.

Hi Brett, if you do a search for Kutno on the blog you’ll find some useful information about Kutno that you can share with your mother. Will she go to Kutno with a translator? If so, she could ask Bożena (mentioned in my posts) to show her around and she could also visit the public library and the national archive to view the collections related to Jewish history. She might enjoy reading some of Sholem Asch’s plays. They are really interesting and they provide a view of prewar Jewish life. I hope she has a wonderful trip!
